Hurricane

October 12, 2018 by Sonya King Leave a Comment

Hurricane. Pictured is a drawing of a house with a roof being blown off, trees bending sideways and the words "uncertainty, fear, stress, uneasy, and surprise" illustrated above in the gray sky. ~ Clearly Muddled Blog ~

Josh needs routine, advanced notice of change, and prefers nothing out of the ordinary to occur. Hurricanes are jerks that don’t care what anyone needs. So, when this latest home wrecker was forecast to be in our neighborhood, Josh retreated into the comfort of his bedroom, and stayed there.

How, what, when, where, and why! Those are the things I need to know. If I know those things I can let Josh know those things, and then, things will be just fine. “Who” is not listed on purpose because “who” is of no interest to Josh. Never has been and probably never will be. So, all I need to know to keep life at an even keel, is everything, but “who”.

Got it.

I found myself relying on weather men and women to give me the answer to the how, what, when, where, and why. As I wrote that sentence I laughed so hard I choked a little!

Weather people are mostly wrong, yet they get to keep their job anyway, because people like me can’t stop watching them! They say one thing, then say the opposite, then act like they were right both times. So, they’re jerks too! So am I for continuing to hang on their every word.

This hurricane didn’t come directly to our community, and for that, I am grateful. There’s a small town called Marianna where we lived when Josh’s sister was born, and Panama City Beach has been one of my favorite places to do comedy shows for years. The people in these towns are what made them so compelling. These towns and many more have been devastated. Property and livelihoods were destroyed.  Precious lives were lost.

When I think about that, having to coach, prompt, and redirect Josh to get him to come back to us after withdrawing into solitude, I’m keenly aware, that I’m the lucky one. It’s sometimes easy to forget that life is good, because I get so busy with all my daily responsibilities. This hurricane reminded me.

Much love to all. Even weather experts guessers.

Leave us a note if you like this episode! Love to hear from you.

About the Josh has Autism Podcast: I never know what he’s going to say. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s insightful, and sometimes it just doesn’t make any sense at all. So, of course we should record it all, and call it a podcast!
