Sensory Super Power

January 18, 2019 by Sonya King Leave a Comment

Sensory Super Power. Pictured is Josh flipping his pencil while animated exclamation marks are twirling around his head. ~ Clearly Muddled Blog ~

When Josh was a toddler, he screeched a lot. A lot! It didn’t seem to follow a pattern, and I couldn’t tell if he was in pain, if he wanted something, or if he was just cranky.  I didn’t know sensory overload was even a thing back then, let alone how it’s connected to autism. What I do know, is that all that screeching made ME cranky!

How something tastes, how it feels, how it sounds, and how bright it is, all affect how Josh will act in any given situation. If a texture makes him uncomfortable, if there’s too much going on at once, or if there’s an unexpected event occurring, he will often feel overwhelmed, and functioning becomes limited.

Josh’s senses are continually on high alert. So essentially, my wonderful son, contrary to the theory that people on the autistic spectrum are apathetic, feels everything, intensely. That sounds like a super power to me.

Leave us a note if you like this episode! Love to hear from you.

About the Josh has Autism Podcast: I never know what he’s going to say. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s insightful, and sometimes it just doesn’t make any sense at all. So, of course we should record it all, and call it a podcast!
